Darryl Hovis serves as the artistic director of Samohi’s department of Theatre . His training comes from South Coast Repertory under Karen Hensel, UC San Diego/La Jolla Playhouse under Anna Shapiro (Steppenwolf Theatre), and he earned his masters in directing and theatre production at Central Washington University. For the last two years, he taught theatre and vocal music at University High School in Irvine. Before that, he spent the previous 15 years as artistic director of the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts in Culver City, a program he also co-founded. Directing credits include Resurrecting Antigone, The Miracle Worker, Into the Woods, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Breakfast Club (Best Production: University of LaVerne), Crimes of the Heart, The Wiz, Little Shop of Horrors, and The Crucible among others. He also took an early production of Antigone to the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. He served as lighting designer for The Angel and the Fiend at the Getty Center, Goodnight Children Everywhere, Oedipus at Colonus, Three Days of Rain and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. A former member of the Chance Theater, directing credits include Therese Raquin, History of the American Film, and The Angelina Project. He has also directed productions of Pippin, The Importance of Being Ernest, Durang Durang, and The Good Doctor for Theater International in Leysin, Switzerland, where he also taught acting.
